| A site survey was conducted by the Raggs' Reef Foundation to identify an area that would be suitable to construct an artificial reef. The survey location is near the Boynton inlet (just to the North of Lynn's reef) off the coast of Boynton Beach in Palm Beach County, Florida. The outer perimeter of approximately 970 feet (North South) by 400 feet (East West) has been identified by the following GPS coordinates: North West corner 26 deg 31.934 80 deg 01.905 North East corner 26 deg 31.935 80 deg 01.830 South East corner 26 deg 31.773 80 deg 01.833 South West corner 26 deg 31.770 80 deg 01.900 At this time the entire benthic area located within this perimeter is free of any hard bottom communities, grass beds or corals. We have found subsurface rock under burden within three feet of the surface of the sand across the majority of the survey area. A light covering of Lyngbya (sp.) was observed on the surface of the sand. The entire area is in approximately 68 to 73 feet of water. Two divers with the Raggs' Reef Foundation and a third diver from Splashdown Divers were present on all dives and can verify these findings. The area we have identified has the potential to expand to the West; however, the under burden is farther from the surface of the sand. It should be noted that the East side of the area is approximately 100 feet West of a small broken patch reef. |
